"Click-It Concert" Tribute: Sam Cooke

Today is Sam Cooke's Birthday! He would have been 79 years old today and would have probably been a bigger legend than he is now. He was a singer, a songwriter, record label CEO, publishing company owner, entrepreneur, Civil Rights defender (refused o play at segregated shows), one of the first black performers at the Copacabana and one of the few black men of that time to be involved in the business side of the music industry. So, let us listen to and celebrate the beautiful music he left behind as a birthday present to him:

You Send Me

What a Wonderful World

Cupid

Bring It On Home to Me (with Lou Rawls)

Another Saturday Night

Chain Gang

She Was Only Sixteen

Twistin' the Night Away

Nothing Can Change This Love

A Change Is Gonna Come

Bonus:

Melanie Fiona's cover of Cupid

Lauryn Hill's version of A Change Is Gonna Come

Let me be the first to say Sam would appreciate a birthday wish to this magnitude. It always warms my heart to see Sam get his due recognition.

Great choice to include Lauryn Hill's version of "Change." Hundreds of artists have attempted the song over the years, but the only two versions I tip my cap to are hers and Aretha Franklin's. As great an artist as Otis was, I've always felt he leaned a little too hard on it. Sue me :-)

Thank you so much for checking out my blog! It was no big deal. I love Sam Cooke and it was honor to give appreciation to him in some way. I agree that Lauryn Hill's version is a great one. Also, I agree that Otis Redding is a little too rough with the song, but I still love him though. Two greats lost at such a young age.
